One of the world’s best ever children’s toys?

JOHN STEGMANN

I have had a long and rewarding career as an architect, inventor and bicycle activist. I may best be known for the Cape Town Cycle Tour which I created with Bill Mylrea in 1978. It is now a world renowned 100+ km cycling event, enjoyed by many thousands every year since.

However, looking back half a century, I rate MOZIBLOX as my greatest contribution because it has turned out to be an exceptional educational toy. Thousands of children have benefitted from it, sets are handed down from generation to generation. MOZIBLOX should continue to help millions more children worldwide, allowing many to escape poverty.

The journey starts with our daughter Anne’s 4th birthday in 1968 when . . . she was given a six-picture cube puzzle. The pictures were so complex and similar that I decided to make her a six-picture cube puzzle with copies of pictures in children’s books.

The project, using oil paints, was taking a long time. After painting three pictures I finished it off quickly using a bright colour and a simple geometric shape for each of the three remaining sides of each cube.

What struck me immediately was that whereas a six-picture cube puzzle is limited to six pictures, the geometric shapes could make lots of patterns and pictures! Inspired by this idea I made her a new set using 27 cubes to include a 3D puzzle. I spent hours choosing the shapes and carefully distributing them among the cubes. And so MOZIBLOX (‘mosaic cubes’), with a seemingly infinite capacity for pattern and picture making, was born!

Everyone was intrigued by this new toy and asked me to make more. That proved to be really difficult. I submitted a cardboard set in a design competition where the judges gave me an award for the toy concept and urged me to make it with wooden cubes. Two entrepreneurs at the prize giving were keen to help.

It took years, but once in production (in plastic) children were attracted by the bright colours and people began describing MOZIBLOX as ‘developmental’ and ‘educational’. Before long it became (and still is) essential equipment for Occupational Therapists.

As decades passed numerous anecdotal reports by adults attributed their skills in mathematics, planning and design to having played with MOZIBLOX when they were very young. Since MOZIBLOX has no numerals this seemed to magic of some kind and I was determined to discover how this occurs.

Psychologists ascribe it to ‘visuospatial processing’; an instinctive and core early development phase, essential to all learning, including numeracy and literacy. Children have to learn to see the world in 3D and to see colours. The very beginning of knowledge acquisition is when an infant sees something, moves towards it and tries to grab it.

MOZIBLOX stimulates early visuospatial processing exceptionally well. Manipulating physical objects (rather than passive observation) is really important. I used to joke about our infant son, remarking that he has two tests for everything he encounters: Is it edible? Can it be broken? If it fails both tests he moves on.

Then I discovered something about numeracy. Did you know that numeracy is essentially about basic reasoning? Toddlers learn the meaning of words like same/different, more/ less, bigger/smaller (logical reasoning) before they learn the numbering system. Reasoning is how numeracy improves comprehension and literacy and future-proofs scholars heading into an unknown future.

MOZIBLOX cubes, with its colours and shapes can be used to teach numeracy and the concept of sets. For older children there are the concepts of permutations, tessellation and geodesics. This is preparation for mathematics, which is about analysing patterns and is a tool for hypothetical reasoning. The infant brain, however is not yet ready for hypothetical reasoning or for virtual reality.

MOZIBLOX Nature is now beautifully made in wood by Beleduc. At first Beleduc engineers were hesitant as they discovered how complex it is to produce. Fortunately for us they persisted.

That opportunity enabled me to give MOZIBLOX its first upgrade. The new colours can be used to teach colour theory and there are now three 3D puzzles — one needing 27 cubes and two needing 8 cubes each — where the solutions are given by particular cubes.

MOZIBLOX encourages experimentation with its limitless capacity for making patterns and pictures. It teaches basic concepts of logical reasoning and facilitates visuospatial processing to a high degree. . .

Could MOZIBLOX, that spark of an idea in 1968, be one of the world’s best ever children’s toys?

GREAT NEW PACKAGING FOR 2021

Developed from the first 27 cube set created in 1968, MOZIBLOX Nature is our flagship product, superbly manufactured by Beleduc. The exceptional educational and therapeutic features are re-inforced by anecdotal evidence that has shown that young children who play with MOZIBLOX often turn out to be good at maths, design and art. All the  endorsements and reports back this up. MOZIBLOX Nature received the coveted German Spiel gut red dot award which further endorses this pedigree.

Jigsaw puzzles have one solution. MOZIBLOX has a multitude of puzzles, often with a multitude of solutions, suitable for almost everyone from toddlers to old- timers and can be kept in the family for generations.

Over the last two centuries, parents around the globe have recognised the benefit of alphabet blocks. These have been popular and will remain popular. Literacy, the ability to understand, speak, read and write a language, is very important and typically accounts for up to 70% of teaching time in junior schools.

Numeracy, a steppingstone to mathematics, is considered to be more difficult than literacy and reserved for older children. Numeracy, however, is the ability to reason and to apply simple numerical concepts*.

It’s as simple as this. Babies come with a number sense that provides a foundation of reasoning to build on. They soon understand the concept of more, and the reason for asking for more. When they can ask for two more they are learning numeracy. Meanwhile, they’re playing — manipulating the blox to explore the graphics, making patterns and pictures — and they’re talking to you, learning important new words and concepts of reasoning that underpin mathematics.

Enormous development is made through early play. I coined the word “litranumeracy” to emphasise the fact that literacy and numeracy have an essential symbiotic relationship and should be taught together from the outset.

There is very much more here than meets the eye!

We have listed many of the worldwide distributors of MOZIBLOX Nature. If you can’t find it, please let us know and we will endeavour to find a solution.
We want you to ask for it by name and help us to create thinkers!

MOZIBLOX JUNIOR

Cleverblox was a 12-cube derivative of the 30-cube Flagship product Moziblox and a valuable experiment.

The new branding name reinforces that connection, it uses the identical set of 12-cubs, now in a box that tells customers what it is and what it does.

Moziblox Junior is made for home use by a child’s first teachers; parents and careers. It has a 24-page full-colour book that speaks to parents of toddlers. It explains why those early years are so precious and how parents can easily help their child make the most of those years to prepare for school.

The book describes what we learned from both Moziblox and Cleverblox. What Moziblox does with much greater variety, very durable cubes and storage box, Moziblox Junior imitates in way to reach many more children and give them the same opportunity. Moziblox Junior will need more care, putting it all away after use, so it lasts for years and helps more than one child.

Moziblox Junior is a baby’s toy and much more! Baby’s toys typically have limited application and are age specific. Moziblox Junior has surprising versatility. It has seemingly simple things for children aged one to discover while playing, and then has more for older children to discover and benefit from, possibly up to age six.

Discovery is not a race. The early start is hugely important; as is progressing slowly at the developing child’s pace. Child neglect is what has to be avoided.

ENDORSEMENTS

“I would like to introduce to you the topic of today’s overview – this ingenious set of Moziblox cubes! I should start with the fact that this is an extremely relevant game for the development of coordination, spatial thinking and creativity… But you know all this perfectly well already! But I really want to pay tribute to the aesthetic component specifically. Cubes are not just beautiful. They are impressively beautiful. Smooth, perfectly polished wood, pleasant colors, patterns that offer many opportunities for creativity… This game was first released in 1965 (I’m sure you already know that only the best can last so long on the market 😉 I’ll say more – today Moziblox is considered to be one of the leading inventions in the educational games industry) … But never again was this idea put into practice so perfectly. Now all areas previously painted white are simply covered with clear varnish. And this is a serious step forward – both in terms of design and in terms of the educational component of the game concept. Template cards of various difficulty levels are included in the game. By the way, some of these tasks will make even us adults rack our wits… However, there is no doubt that the most interesting thing is improvising. We can create the most incredible images – not only 2-dimentional, but also three-dimensional, we experiment with colour, shape and scale! Moziblox is a unique opportunity for educators, therapists and parents in terms of the development of children’s abstract thinking, combinatorial thinking, concentration, the ability to conceptualize, plan and calculate.”

Alex Berchuck, Двері до чарівного світу, Ukraine

Moziblox is an amazing product I would recommend it to any therapist who is looking to make an investment in their practise. It is a wonderful tool for parents to use with their children and will present with many exciting challenges for the whole family.

Gwen Reddy, Occupational Therapist, South Africa

“I have fortunately inherited one of the older versions of Moziblox from my gorgeous mom. My children are 2 and 4 and absolutely loving them. I can remember hours of enjoyment with these same blocks myself as a child.”

Genieve Frick, Retired Psychologist, Australia

“You will never believe how many discussions I’ve had in my life with teachers and therapists about this product. Please never stop making it!! It’s a wonderful tool. Our local remedial teacher swears by it for improving reading!!”

Erika van Zyl, Occupational Therapist, South Africa

“I am a cognitive psychologist working in London with children who have visual perceptual and motor difficulties. I have been using the original set of Moziblox as part of my therapeutic package for over 25 years and they are unique in the contribution they make to the therapy.”

Dr Angela Webb, Psychologist, UK

“I am a remedial tutor of some 15 years, heading my own remedial teaching unit in London for the past 13 years. Having specialised in visual perception and neurodevelopmental therapy, I have found Moziblox an invaluable tool. This block design activity, soon to be restructured as Cleverblox, allows me to help children deal with sometimes profound spatial difficulties. It is used by many to teach thinking skills but I have found that, when used regularly in a controlled program, it can also enhance neural inter-hemispheric integration and so improve a parts-to-whole (gestalt) understanding, allowing the individual to become far more organised in their thinking. In this way a profound improvement in comprehension and general performance can be achieved. Thank you for this wonderful teaching instrument. I look forward to the new version.”

Tamara Nathan, Remedial Teacher, UK

“Educational toys and all sorts of puzzles was always part of our household. Then I found Moziblox and my 4 children with their friends never stopped playing with it. There was always one more challenge or pattern to build. But the best was to build the cube. The results showed in Maths and IT marks, and all four my children studied and became professionals in the fields of Maths and Science.”

Judith Hattingh, Mother, South Africa

“We now have Moziblox. It was a project getting it – since it cannot be found in Serbia – it took a lot of e-mailing to finally buy it. I cannot find words to describe how great that game / toy is.”

Tijana Pendzic, Serbia

“Moziblox Nature is pure class and fitting as the top-of-the-range Blox product.”

Gerard Finnemore, Clinical Psychologist, Johannesburg (SA)

The German “spiel gut” award was created to encourage toy manufacturers to bring better toys on the market. The award is given to toys that meet specific criteria, which have been continuously developed by an independent committee composed of psychologists, educators, parents, and other individuals since 1954. More than 2,500 toys have already been given the spiel gut award, and as many as 600 new toys are tested by the committee each year.
The spiel gut committee evaluates toys based on the following criteria:-ability to stimulate the child’s imagination-ability to hold the child’s interest with numerous play possibilities-connection to the child’s environment-appropriate size and quantity-durability-appropriate ease of use-safety-environmental friendliness-price. Companies who would like to have their toys certified by spiel gut must send a product catalogue. The spiel gut committee will then decide which toys it would like to test. The company must send samples of the toys. The toys will be evaluated by the committee, and tested by children and their families. The committee then decides whether to certify the toy.
